Calibre 9.13 E-Book Manager Improves PDF Output, Content Server, and More

Calibre 9.13 has officially arrived, bringing a focused set of bug fixes and stability improvements to the popular open-source e-book management suite. PDF Conversion and Rendering Fixes

A key highlight in Calibre 9.13 is a fix for a PDF output regression introduced early in the 9.x series. Previously, internal links inside generated PDF files failed to scroll correctly, placing the target location a few lines above the intended view due to a top-margin offset error.

Additionally, the conversion pipeline on Linux receives a structural stability boost:

  • HTML5 Parser Preloading: On Linux distributions shipping older versions of libxml2, Calibre now preloads the html5-parser library. This proactive step prevents unexpected crash errors when converting e-books directly into PDF format.

Content Server and UI Regressions Resolved

The embedded Calibre Content Server receives key maintenance patches in this release. It fixes an unhandled server error that occurred when users attempted to upload data files to e-books lacking pre-existing data attachments.

This release also resolves several regressions introduced in version 9.12:

  • Built-in Viewer: Restores full functional search within the built-in e-book reader.
  • Conversion Options: Fixes a bug where conversion setting sub-sections completely disappeared from the interface.
  • Bulk Metadata Editor: Restores hidden Yes/No button controls within custom boolean column edits.
  • Book Details Panel: Re-enables seamless drag-and-drop support for updating e-book cover images.

Cross-Platform Enhancements

Beyond core rendering improvements, Calibre 9.13 fixes OS-specific bugs and updates external news sources:

  • Windows Thread Stability: Addresses a crash triggered when third-party plugins attempt to trigger desktop notifications from non-GUI background threads.
  • Edit Book Image Compression: Resolves an error inside the Edit Book feature when converting GIF images into JPEG format on Windows builds.
  • News Fetching: Improves recipe parsing and delivery for the Nautilus Magazine news source.
