Arch Linux 2026.08.01 Drops: Powered by Linux Kernel 7.1 and Archinstall 4.4

The Arch Linux team has officially released its ISO snapshot for August 2026, marking a major milestone for the rolling-release distribution. Arch Linux 2026.08.01 is the first official snapshot to ship with the Linux 7.1 kernel series by default.

Arch Linux Desktop

This updated kernel delivers noticeable improvements to hardware detection capabilities. It brings better support for brand-new components while fixing hardware recognition issues on legacy machines where older ISOs struggled.

On top of the new kernel, this snapshot rolls up all package updates and security patches released throughout July 2026 into a single, clean installation image.

What Is New in Archinstall 4.4?

The August ISO snapshot comes bundled with Archinstall 4.4, the latest iteration of the distribution's menu-based installer. This update introduces several workflow improvements, new desktop profiles, and granular customization tools.

Desktop Profiles and Layout Changes

  • Niri DankMaterialShell Profile: Introduces a brand-new desktop profile option directly inside the setup menu.
  • Budgie Desktop Refresh: Replaces the default terminal emulator and file manager applications within the Budgie profile.
  • Cutefish Profile Sunset: Officially removes the Cutefish desktop environment from the installer options.

Boot, Localization, and Network Tweaks

  • Plymouth Boot Splash: Adds configuration options for Plymouth boot splash screens, complete with safety warnings in the bootloader menu.
  • IWD Standalone Setup: Adds a standalone Wireless Daemon (IWD) option to the network configuration step.
  • Better Wi-Fi Handling: Improves wireless network selection and connection reliability during setup.
  • Console Font Controls: Enables manual font selection from the Locales menu and automatically sets the console font based on your chosen language.

Installer Diagnostics and Permission Fixes

  • Config Validation Summary: Displays an installation summary as soon as a valid configuration profile is generated.
  • Paste.rs Log Sharing: Adds a new share-log subcommand to upload system setup logs (install.log) directly to paste.rs for easier troubleshooting.
  • Revamped Seat Management: Overhauls seat access selection and automatically adds users to the seat group when seatd is enabled.

Upgrade Instructions and Availability

The Arch Linux 2026.08.01 release is meant strictly for new system installations or recovery media. Because Arch follows a rolling-release model, existing users do not need to download the new ISO image.

If you are already running Arch, you can fetch the Linux 7.1 kernel along with all July security patches by running a standard system upgrade: 

sudo pacman -Syu
