Support for Ubuntu 25.10, codenamed “Questing Quokka,” is officially coming to an end on July 9, 2026. If you are still running this version on your machine, you are down to your final days of official support. To keep your system safe and stable, you need to transition over to the latest Ubuntu 26.04 LTS as soon as possible.
Ubuntu 25.10 originally arrived in October 2025. Because it was launched as an interim release, it was only hardwired to receive a strict nine months of ongoing updates. This short lifecycle stands in stark contrast to Ubuntu’s Long-Term Support (LTS) versions, which enjoy five full years of standard desktop updates, alongside an extra five years if you opt into an Ubuntu Pro subscription.
What Happens Next for Questing Quokka?
When an Ubuntu release goes End of Life (EOL), your computer won't suddenly stop working. Nothing dramatic happens overnight, and your desktop will boot up just like it always does.
However, Canonical will completely stop the flow of high-impact security updates and critical bug fixes.
Interestingly, some of your apps will stay fresh for a while. Snaps like the Firefox web browser will continue to receive independent updates because Snap software is maintained outside of the core distribution lifecycle.
The catch is that the underlying snapd engine relies on standard APT repositories for its own updates. Over time, as that engine falls behind, newer Snap features might stop working correctly on an outdated system.
Why Staying on an Unsupported OS is a Risk
Using an unsupported version of Linux is highly discouraged for long-term production or daily use. Without timely Linux security patches, your operating system becomes increasingly exposed to newly discovered exploits.
Beyond security vulnerabilities, the software ecosystem around an EOL release quickly degrades. Third-party developers, PPAs, and external APT repositories frequently drop support for old versions right after the official EOL date.
Eventually, Canonical will move the entire Ubuntu 25.10 package archive to its historical servers. When this happens, finding and installing basic software dependencies directly through the terminal becomes a massive headache.
Moving Forward: The Benefits of Ubuntu 26.04 LTS
Fortunately, the vast majority of enterprise users, cloud instances, and casual desktop enthusiasts already stick to the long-term support versions anyway. If you did install the interim release, the Ubuntu upgrade process to Ubuntu 26.04 LTS “Resolute Raccoon” is straightforward and well worth the effort.
Upgrading to the latest LTS brings a massive wave of system improvements. You will instantly net a newer Linux kernel, updated hardware stacks, and fresher versions of your favorite desktop environments. It also gives you a highly stable foundation that will keep your PC running smoothly for years without forcing you to worry about another upgrade cycle anytime soon.
