Canonical is tackling this challenge head-on by announcing a brand-new Virtualization Hardware Enablement (HWE) stack for the Ubuntu 26.04 LTS (Resolute Raccoon) operating system series. While Ubuntu administrators are already accustomed to kernel and graphics HWE stacks on LTS releases, Canonical is now extending this enablement strategy directly into the virtualization ecosystem.
Why Virtualization Hardware Enablement Matters
Virtualization software operates at the closest possible level to modern server processors. When CPU silicon manufacturers introduce new architectural capabilities, the surrounding software infrastructure must evolve alongside them.
In complex environments like confidential computing, updating the host is not just about the kernel and KVM—it requires a coordinated effort across hypervisors, management libraries, firmware, and tooling.
"Virtualization is closely tied to hardware. When CPU vendors add new capabilities, the software stack has to evolve with them. For confidential computing, that stack includes the kernel and KVM, QEMU, libvirt, firmware such as OVMF, and management tooling," Canonical explained.
To bridge this gap, the Virtualization HWE stack bundles four critical components together:

- Sovereign and Private Clouds: Vital for regulated industries that require strict tenant isolation guarantees.

Deployment: Opt-In Design and the ubuntu_virt_helper Tool
Canonical recognizes that stability remains the core promise of an LTS distribution. Because of this, the new Virtualization HWE stack is strictly opt-in. Existing Ubuntu LTS installations will retain their base virtualization stack unless system administrators explicitly opt to install the HWE package set.
The new stack is scheduled to ship alongside the Ubuntu 26.04.1 LTS point release next month.

ubuntu_virt_helper utility with Ubuntu 26.04
LTS. Virtualization is not a single isolated package; it is an

ubuntu_virt_helper tool allows administrators to manage the
entire HWE stack as a unified block, preventing version mismatches and
ensuring seamless software alignment.
